HOW DO I LEARN ENGLISH?

Hi readers, here I am going to share how I have been learning English all this time.

When did I start learning English? Well as I did not study in kindergarten, I got an English lesson when I was in third grade of elementary school. I hated English; I was the only student in the class who could not count from one to twenty - I did not remember the numbers. I got punished for that.

Recently, I have just figured out that learning the language myself is better than learning from others' Explanations; including teachers' and friends' explanations. I am so sorry for saying this. But it does not mean that I do not listen to teachers in class. I listened to what teachers said even though sometimes it did not help a lot. Then I tried to improve myself.

Basically, I have been learning a lot from movies and songs - mostly. So after getting lessons from class, I try to relate the lessons to movies that I watch or songs that I listen to, and vice versa. For example, There was a pre-test before a grammar class, then I found the terms "do me a favor" on the paper. I had never got any explanation about that expression, but I remembered Miley Cyrus' song in her movie - Hannah Montana (the title was "Dream") and in "Another Cinderella Story" movie. I simply drew those movies in my mind while remembering the meaning, and got the answer's right. It was only one simple question, but I can not forget.

I am actually an auditory learner.  I have been learning a lot from everything that I listen to. However, I find myself enjoying visual things like lettering, writing the lessons nicely and make myself excited when I am reading the materials. Well, I am still learning too. I have just figured out that this is also one of the best ways to reflect on lessons that I got. I prefer to understand, I from the fundamental elements (in a simple way of course) rather than to remember or memorize. But I never think too deep, I mean the complicated things related to the basic concept that I have just started understanding. For instance, there are "words, phrases, clauses, and sentences"; when I start to introduce myself (or to others, students, little sister, etc.) to those terms, I will not think about the adjective clause, noun clause, or maybe other deeper features in English grammar. I try to make it simple when I begin to understand something. Because of this, I think I understand grammar better and even a lot more enjoy my independent learning process.

I learned English for myself, I mean I did not have special purposes. I do not have any plan to work (that connected to English), target to work or study abroad, I have no intention to do something "internationally", I have never even thought that I would teach English. lol. So speaking, listening, and grammar are dominant as those are the aspect that I can handle. As I learn mostly from movies and songs, my vocabulary (especially related to academic fields) is a disaster. Reading (for tests, academic journals and so on) is a great challenge for me; at the same time, I am not confident enough to write as, probably, reading and writing are related.
But I am trying, I have to.
How about you? How do you learn English?
