HOW DO I LEARN ENGLISH?

Gambar
Hi readers, here I am going to share how I have been learning English all this time. When did I start learning English? Well as I did not study in kindergarten, I got an English lesson when I was in third grade of elementary school. I hated English; I was the only student in the class who could not count from one to twenty - I did not remember the numbers. I got punished for that. Recently, I have just figured out that learning the language myself is better than learning from others' Explanations; including teachers' and friends' explanations. I am so sorry for saying this. But it does not mean that I do not listen to teachers in class. I listened to what teachers said even though sometimes it did not help a lot. Then I tried to improve myself. Basically, I have been learning a lot from movies and songs - mostly. So after getting lessons from class, I try to relate the lessons to movies that I watch or songs that I listen to, and vice versa. For example, Th...

Penting Nggak Publikasi Kemesraan?

Gambar
Assalamualaikum...

Home-School Literacy

Gambar
Pahl, K. & Rowsell, J ., Literacy and Education, London: Paul Chapman Publishing, 2010. CHAPTER 3: Children’s texts go to school focuses on children’s experience of literacy at home is connected to literacy at school. Every communicative practice done by children is counted as literacy (talk, gestures, drawing, etc.). Briefly, Pahl and Rowsell state that recontextualization , especially from home literacy to school literacy, is not easy at all. It might be interesting if parents can adapt their behavior to support children’s literacy at home. Fortunately, many educators have been trying to connect home literacy and school literacy in order to explore students’ funds of knowledge . Some ways are book bag, storysack, and backpacks program; reading is actually main strategy. Relating to this, ORIM (Opportunities, Recognition, Interaction, Model) framework is introduced by Hannon and Nutbrown. As teachers and parents give ‘opportunities’ to students to connect home-school li...

Multimodal Literacies

Pahl, K. & Rowsell, J ., Literacy and Education, London: Paul Chapman Publishing, 2010. CHAPTER 2 Pahl and Rowsell highlight the contents of this section as Multimodal here stands for any communication concept that can be used as literacy sources, such as written (linguistic signs), visual, gestural and tactile (we can see, smell, touch, and feel) concept. Texts as artefacts, Texts we use, Reading path, Materiality of texts, Multimodal literacy. Texts as cultural artefacts: the object has a history (traces of practice), a material presence (does not have to be material, it can be abstract). Every object has a story to tell, Affordances (several things we can do using something, the use of something, optional act we can do with something) and Constraints (everything is related in use) . Multimodality involves the complex interweaving of pictures, sounds, movement, etc. In particular, regarding to the place for multimodality, Pahl and Rowsell stated “We see multimodalit...

Why Literacy as A Social Practice?

Gambar
Assalamu'alaikum , everyone. Literacy is quiet popular issue these days. Studies, theories and practices related to this are widely explored. One of my course in the first semester, last year also discussed about this; it is so sad it has to be ended. Interesting cases, interesting process and interesting lecturer, I believe, make everybody love it. The very first thing we discuss about this course is "Why Literacy as a Social Practice?"   Well this post is going to show you about some sources connected to that question; some parts of books or journals are reviewed. Okay it is not really review but a kind of reflection, my reflection, to those sources. I hope it'll help. This topic may be also interesting for you:  Open up My Eyes: My Childood Literacy Practices From the very beginning of the lecture, I have realized that literacy is particularly important. As I came to the class with empty headed; had no idea about what exactly literacy is, what we ...
